Glossary of Cash Settlement Terms:

Plaintiff: the party that institutes a legal claim or bring a lawsuit to court

Defendant: the party against which a legal action is brought

Lawsuit: an action or a suit brought before a court, as to recover a right or redress a grievance

Cash Advance: an advance of funds to a claimant; advances differ from a loan in that repayment of an advance is contingent upon a future outcome

Contingent: dependent upon an uncertain future event

Settlement: the completion of a transaction, e.g. upon expiry of a future, the underlying is delivered in return for a cash payment

Litigation: a legal proceeding in a court

Attorney: a professional person authorized to practice law
